Demethylation of Methylmercury in Bird, Fish, and Earthworm

چکیده

Toxicity of methylmercury (MeHg) to wildlife and humans results from its binding cysteine residues proteins, forming MeHg-cysteinate (MeHgCys) complexes that hinder biological functions. MeHgCys can be detoxified in vivo, yet how this occurs is unknown. We report are transformed into selenocysteinate [Hg(Sec)4] multiple animals two phyla (a waterbird, freshwater fish, earthworms) sampled different geographical areas contaminated by Hg sources. In addition, high energy-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HR-XANES) chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry the waterbird liver support Hg(Sec)4 selenoprotein P biomineralization chemically inert nanoparticulate mercury selenide (HgSe). The provide a foundation for understanding detoxification higher organisms suggest identified demethylation pathway common nature.

The aim of the present study was to develop a rapid and inexpensive method for the determination of methylmercury in fish tissues based on GC/ECD instrumentation. The new method is based on acidic digestion in hydrochloric acid and subsequent extraction with toluene. Methylme...

METHYLMERCURY IN SPORT FISH: Information for Fish Consumers

saltwater fish. In some lakes, rivers, and coastal waters in California, methylmercury has been found in some types of fish at concentrations that may be harmful to human health. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has issued health advisories to fishers and their families giving recommendations on how much of the affected fish in these areas can be safely eaten. In the...

Fish Consumption, Methylmercury, and Human Heart Disease

Environmental mercury continues to be of concern to public health advocates, both in the U.S. and abroad, and new research continues to be published. A recent analysis of potential health benefits of reduced mercury emissions has opened a new area of public health concern: adverse effects on the cardiovascular system, which could account for the bulk of the potential economic benefits. The auth...

Methylmercury and fish consumption: weighing the risks.

In this issue (page 1439) Dr. Charles Dumont and colleagues report a substantial fall in mercury levels (as measured by the concentration of methylmercury in hair samples) from 1988 to 1993 among Crees living in the James Bay area of Quebec. Fish in hydroelectric reservoirs had been found to be contaminated with mercury and, in 1988, 14.2% of the population of the area had levels of 15.0 mg/kg ...
